Honoring Service,
Building Community

In 1948, twenty-five World War II veterans came together with a shared purpose—to establish an American Legion Post dedicated to serving fellow veterans and the Duluth, Georgia community.

Duluth, located along the Chattahoochee River in Gwinnett County, traces its origins to the early 1800s as Howell’s Crossroads, founded by early settler Evan Howell. With the arrival of the railroad in 1873, the town was renamed Duluth and grew into the vibrant, community-focused city it is today—making it an ideal home for Post 251.

Following a local basketball game, the founding members gathered in the Duluth School gymnasium, each contributing $25 to establish what would become American Legion Chattahoochee Post 251. The Post’s first home was located along the river, where members built a simple gathering place rooted in camaraderie and service.

As membership expanded, Post leadership secured over seven acres on Duluth Highway through a handshake agreement—laying the foundation for a permanent home. Construction began in 1955, and by 1959, the current Post facility was completed. Today, Post 251 continues to serve veterans, their families, and the community—honoring its legacy while building for the future.
